Making your home energy efficient

One of the biggest contributors to your home energy bill is, of course, your heating. So how do you cut back on your fuel bill without freezing your socks off?

First of all, ensuring that your home is not losing heat could help you to save on energy spending. Draught-proofing around windows and doorways is always a good idea, especially for older properties. You don’t want your precious heat to be escaping through holes and gaps, including chimneys! Glass can also be a source of heat loss, so you might also want to consider investing in extra glazing.

Furthermore, insulation is key to retaining heat inside your home, and you can opt for cavity-wall or solid-wall insulation, loft insulation, floor insulation, and much more depending on your budget and style of build.

Experts suggest keeping your heating set at a constant temperature for optimum efficiency. If you are unsure whether your current provider is giving you the best possible price, then you should carry out a simple and free home energy comparison.

Information & F.A.Q

Compare home energy prices to find the best deal for you

Imagine you wanted a new car, and found an identical model with another garage for a third of the price—you would go for that one, wouldn't you? Energy providers are no different—they are all offering the same end product, but you just need to find the best possible price!

According to statistics, most homes in the UK do not switch their energy supplier and are therefore paying more each year than they need to be. So, when your energy contract is up for renewal, it's up to you to find out whether renewing is the most efficient and economic option. However, you needn't worry about having to spend time searching for comparisons. You can compare home energy prices easily and quickly with a home energy comparison site.

If your supplier rolls your deal over or raises your tariff, then you can't complain if you haven't looked for a cheaper deal. What’s more, even if you have been quite happy with your supplier, then there's no harm in finding a better deal elsewhere and asking your provider to match it?

Check if you're eligible for a Green Homes Grant

If you are looking at making your home greener, then you may be surprised to know that you could be awarded a grant from the government. This is called a Green Homes Grant and can offer you up to £10,000 towards the cost, so long as it is carried out by a trusted, registered tradesperson.

Available to homeowners, you can apply for the scheme online at, and all you need is the following:

- Your name and date of birth;
- a quote for the work
- your trusted tradesperson's licence number

If your application is successful, you'll be given an e-voucher for your home improvement project, and you will only be able to redeem this and release the funds once the work has been completed to satisfaction.

You see, there are ways on top of a home energy comparison search to be more careful with your money!

Consider renewable energy solutions

There's no better way of being energy efficient than creating your own renewable energy, so why not consider systems like heat pumps, solar panels, or solar battery storage systems?

Heat pumps can use renewable technology to produce heat, turning your existing domestic heating solution into a back-up supply, and thus saving you money and reducing your carbon footprint. There are various types of pumps designed for domestic homes and commercial spaces.

Solar panels, meanwhile, let you create your own energy and can be used as on- or off-grid solutions. These are easily installed and can really help you to reap the financial benefits!

In the winter, however, solar panels may not be enough to heat your home, so you may need an additional source of energy, or to dip into your stored energy. If your solar panels generate extra energy that is not needed in your home, it will be exported to the grid and, in exceptional circumstances, you can get paid for this additional energy. However, with a battery storage system in place, you can use this excess energy at a later date and make your home fully self-sufficient.

If these solutions aren't a viable option for your home or workplace, then you should seriously consider doing a home energy comparison search.

Have a Smart Meter installed

Last but not least, a Smart Meter offers a great source of information to you as a homeowner. It can be hard to know how to reduce your energy costs if you don't know where the money is being spent, but with a Smart Meter, you can see exactly where your spending is, penny by penny! Most Smart Meters will tally your gas and electricity costs individually, or as a combined total, and will allow you to set a daily or weekly budget. Understanding your unique daily usage can help you to significantly reduce your home costs and to live more efficiently.
