As a small to medium business, it is rare that you’ll ever have much funding to spare. You will be constantly reinvesting your net profit to see the company grow. Because of this, your outgoings need water tight control. Your utility bills play a big part in your outgoings, so it’s important to analyse where costs can be cut. This is where Bright Utilities come in. Business water is a great place to start if you have not yet taken advantage of the government’s changes to business water supplier policies in 2017. Even if you have switched suppliers since then, business water is a constantly evolving market. Why not see if you can get an even cheaper water bill and keep your costs further afloat?
A water audit is basically a detailed inspection of your businesses water usage. It’s important to assess this audit and identify where you could be saving money. Water Audit Surveys offer a great service for businesses looking to get a water audit.
There could even be areas within your business where water is consumed unnecessarily. You can take action to reduce this.

- Reducing your business water consumption not only reduces your overall water bills, but will also make your business more environmentally friendly.
- Over 20% of the UK’s water consumption is from businesses.
- Despite the amount of rainfall in the UK yearly, there aren’t as many resources available to collect water than other countries, meaning the volume of water available per person is quite low.
Why should my business compare commercial water?
The primary motivator for switching your commercial water supplier is financial. The pitfalls of staying with the same domestic energy suppliers year in year out are well known, and the same applies to commercial water. Remaining in the same rollover contract after your renewal date often leads to higher prices. Quite simply because, the longer a business sticks with a single provider, the more expensive their water will likely become. The best deals are usually reserved for new customers and offered as inducements to switch.
There are some other, more nuanced reasons to make a switch, too. If your business is growing or simply changing, then its water usage is likely to change too. Different circumstances might lead to more or less consumption, or demand a different kind of service from your supplier. Not every supplier is suited to every business, so it might be time to make a switch to suit your new circumstances.
How do the water charges work for my bill when I compare commercial water?
The best way to find out is to contact your commercial water supplier and they will be able to help out.
You’ll be charged either for the amount of water you use. Plus a set charge if you’re on a meter, or you’ll pay a set amount based on the value of your commercial property.

Ways to reduce your business water consumption
Water is a finite resource. This means that it is important to reduce your water consumption as much as you can. There are ways to reduce your businesses water consumption that doesn’t involve switching provider:
- Make all of your staff aware of the importance of reduced water consumption. Having a mindful workforce will improve your usage greatly.
- It is possible to invest in more environmentally friendly plumbing. Low-flow toilets, sinks and other water outlets are available.
- If there are any leaks within your premises, it is important to identify and fix these straight away. A dripping pipe can lose around 20 gallons of water every day!
- Food Wholesaler
When this business came to us, they were still with their set water supplier from before the supplier policies were lifted in 2017, and hadn’t even heard about these options on the market until it was recommended by a business associate to check their business water bills. That’s when they came across us here at Bright Utilities. After a quick phone call we made them aware of our network of business water suppliers offering much cheaper business water with whom they could switch to in order to pay cheaper water bills. In the end, we managed to save them £5000 in the first year with their new providers.
- Vehicle Finance Company
This company had been with their provider for three years, after initially seeing a great money saving opportunity with them back in 2018. After a couple of years, their providers then significantly raised their business water costs and so the business came to us in order to fix this. We worked with them to look at their current water bills, and searched our database to compare this with our network of lenders. Who can undertake a commercial water rate comparison?
Prior to the passing of the Water Act in 2014. No business that used less than 5,000m3 of water could choose their provider. This meant that the water market was essentially static, and there was no opportunity for businesses to compare commercial water rates, least of all move to a cheaper supplier. The act changed all that, though, and in 2017 the water market was deregulated, ensuring that any company could run a commercial water comparison and change their supplier accordingly. This equated to a large scale and quite dramatic deregulation of a previously limited market.
This brought about the end of regional monopolies. Nowadays businesses can choose their supplier from a list of 35 companies. Each of them regulated by Ofwat, to assure quality of service and a level playing field. This service applies to around 1.2 million businesses in the UK, and offers potentially huge savings compared to the era of monopolies.
It’s important to remember that this only works for commercial water. Domestic users are still some way off being able to choose their water supplier. Businesses in Scotland and England are free to compare commercial water rates and switch as they see fit, but companies in Wales must use over 50 megalitres before they become eligible. There are, of course, certain other limitations depending on your business’ location and more specific needs, but those caveats are few and far between. Any commercial property can compare commercial water rates, switch, and reap the many financial benefits.
Multi Site Supply?
The advantages for multi-site businesses are especially profound. Businesses who operate in several locations across the country might once have been forced to use different water suppliers. That, in turn, means a different set of bills for each. Switching allows multi-site companies to consolidate and simplify their bills by putting each of their premises on the same supplier.
Whatever your motivations for changing supplier, a commercial water rates comparison is the best place to start. It will show you the various prices from different suppliers, but also the associated services and any added extras. A comparison is about more than simply cost, and, here at Bright Utilities, we understand the importance of finding the best provider, not just the cheapest.
How can I compare commercial water?
A simple commercial water comparison takes as little as 60 seconds. While savings will differ between businesses, our customers usually save up to 45% after comparing water with us. The process is extremely simple and streamlined. You’ll need some details from your water bill, most notably your supplier and how much water you use. After that, it’s as simple as inputting the information into our comparison tool, which will take care of the rest.
You’ll be presented with a series of different companies and prices, and from there you can delve a little deeper into what they offer and make your choice. Recent research indicates that the difference between the cheapest and most expensive supplier for an average business is £590—so there are some big savings to be made. When you compare commercial water, you will have to work out how your bills are calculated. If your business has a water meter, your bills will be determined by how much water you use. If you don't have a meter, you'll be charged a set fee based on the value of your property.
